二日市温泉 Futsukaichi Spa

Futsukaichi Spa has a history of more than 1,300 years, and it was once a favorite spot of Dazaifu government officials and Manyo poets. One poem is said to have been composed at the Spa by Otomo no Tabito, the chief of Dazaifu, and it is included in the “Manyoshu” (a collection of ancient Japanese poems). According to the legend of Buzo-ji Temple, Fujiwara Toramaro who was an influential local figure cured his daughter Princess Ruriko's illness using the hot spring (Futsukaichi Spa). This spa is a renowned hot spring in Hakata, and its water has a reputation for making the skin moist and beautiful. There are also spa hotels where visitors can stop by for a day spa experience or come for overnight stays.

武蔵寺 Buzoji Temple

This temple was built in the Asuka period (538-710C.E.) and is said to be the oldest temple in Kyushu. It was mentioned in Ryojin Hisho and Uji Shui Monogatari, and was also known in the capital as “Musashi Temple” and the “Hot Spring Temple.” It is believed that Buzo-ji Temple is related to Hannya-ji Temple which was built by the chief of Dazaifu at the time. According to the legend of Buzo-ji Temple, the idea to build this temple came to Fujiwara Toramaro in a dream.
